At the most basic level, you'll need something to punch with (gloves), and something to punch at. If you're training solo, then you'll need a speed ball or a punching bag suspended from the ceiling.
If you have a partner who's willing to be punched at, then you can get away with just your gloves and punching mitts. The other iconic piece of boxing equipment is of course the skipping rope.
As with all aerobic exercise, you'll burn fat and build your endurance. You'll also increase your strength, speed and coordination. You may even improve your self confidence by promoting self discipline.
Other benefits include:
As boxing is a physically demanding, contact form of exercise, it is essential to get instruction on the proper technique to use. There are many instructional videos available, but I highly recommend visiting a trainer in person, at least once, to ensure you're not going to injure yourself.
Boxing, of course, begins with punching. The right jab is one of the most powerful punches. You punch straight from the chin with your right fist, with your body weight shifting to the front foot whilst pushing into the floor with the ball of the back foot for increased power.
Exercises include drills of one particular punch, or a combination of different types of punches. And of course, we cannot forget skipping. Skipping can be considered an exercise all on its own, and there are numerous combinations you can try with skipping. Straight two feet jump, scissors, slaloming, double jumps... again; the list is only limited by your imagination.
The Boxing Depot has a range of equipment. They have a full training set for $79.95 which includes gloves, skipping rope, and two target mitts.
They also carry a 6 piece speed bag set for $69.95 which includes everything you need to set up your speed bag including the speed bag, brackets, gloves, hand wraps and a jump rope.
This is a contact sport. If you're just participating for fitness, you'll be wearing mitts and hitting leather targets, of course, and not people. But it's still a contact sport and thus the risk of injuring yourself is higher than in using other fitness equipment. So it is important to warm up thoroughly, cool down thoroughly, and get proper technique instructions.
So if you're bored with your current routine, and looking for an all over body workout that's going to stimulate your coordination and self discipline, and if you're feeling a little over stressed with work and looking to work out that aggression, then using boxing equipment is going to suit you to a tee!
