Avoid Harmful Toxins in Cosmetics

What are the ramification of the chemical and cosmetic mixtures we use on a daily basis? Is it wise? Are there better options? These are questions I can't help asking.

Although some skin care experts report otherwise, I'm hesitant to slather my skin with chemical concoctions.

When I consider the alarming rise in cancer rates, it's difficult to ignore the possible role of chemicals in our environment.

They're in our food, our air, our cleaning supplies, and our personal care products. I am NOT okay with that.

So, my personal choice is to reduce my interaction with chemicals wherever possible.

At the same time, I'm a cosmetologist, so using products that work is important to me. Many natural and organic products fall short on effectiveness. There needs to be a balance.

In these pages, I'll outline some of the natural and organic brands I've tried and rate their effectiveness to help you gague where your product dollars are best spent.

Harmful Chemical and Cosmetic Considerations

Many products are made with entirely artificial ingredients. "Artificial" translates to "chemical," although that doesn't sound as acceptable. The tame term doesn't lessen the harmful effects of these ingredients.

Artificial fragrances can cause skin irritation and chemical sensitivity.

Artificial colors can also be irritating to the skin, and some have ingredients that can be carcinogenic (cancer causing).

Chemical preservatives, which are present in most non-organic skin care products, can cause skin irritation and allergies.

Here are a few terms that indicate the presence of potentially harmful chemical ingredients...

  • Phthalates (used for texture)
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • Parabens (preservatives)
    • Methyl Paraben
    • Propyl Paraben
    • Ethyl Paraben
    • Butyl Paraben
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Petrolatum
  • Mineral Oil
  • Imidazolidinyl Urea
  • Diazolidinyl Urea
  • Formaldehyde
  • Triethanolamine (TEA)
  • Diethanolamine (DEA)
  • Stearalkonium Chloride
  • Synthetic Fragrances
  • Synthetic Colors
