If the first thought that comes to mind is "Ouch!" then yep, you've probably tried one.
But as they say..."no pain, no gain."
And in this case what you gain is a smooth, hair-free body for a long stretch of time.
It's basically a hand held device with several automatic tweezers that spin around and yank out the hairs.
Hair must be grown to about 5mm long for the rotating tweezers to grab it.
The benefit of using an epilator is that it removes hair from the root. This means the results are much longer lasting than other methods which remove hair from the surface of the skin. Waxing also removes hair by the root, but it's far messier and more time consuming than these electric hand-held wonders.
There are two disadvantages of this approach. First, the tweezers don't work as well on fine hairs. Second, there is an increased chance of ingrown hairs using this method, particularly in the bikini area.
Here's why... Because hair is being removed from the root, it takes a while for it to grow back. In the meantime, skin cells which are not exfoliated can grow over the follicle. This makes it difficult for the hair to find its way out and it ends up growing around in circles just below the surface of the skin.
If used improperly (too quickly or at the wrong angle) the tweezers can break the hairs off below the surface of the skin. Guess what... stubble, really soon after a treatment. No good. But give it another shot, this method requires a bit of practice. Given a few tries, you'll be hairless for weeks and loving it!
