Hair Removal

Methods and Techniques

Hair removal methods vary widely. The cost and convenience also vary. And some procedures offer much better results than others.

For centuries, women have been experimenting with ways of ridding themselves of excess hair.

Now, men are joining in the pursuit of smooth, hairless bods.

The following articles detail facts and techniques for each method. You'll also find information on the pros and cons of each approach.

Surface Removal

These methods remove hair from where it grows out of the surface of the skin. Results are short lived as the stubble appears within a day or two of the process.

This means that while these methods can be relatively quick, painless and inexpensive, the results are very temporary.

Removal From Follicle

smooth, hairless skin

These methods remove hair straight from the root, which provides much longer results than the surface removal methods.

Those long-lasting, smooth, hairless results don't come without a price though. In this case it's the pain factor. There's just no way around it, ripping hair out by the root hurts a bit.

The degree of pain depends on your pain tolerance and the length of your experience with these methods. Each time you repeat the procedure, the pain diminishes. And honestly, it's not unbearable pain, just uncomfortable.

The other drawback to this method is an increase in ingrown hairs. There are things you can do to prevent a surge of ingrowns though. And all this is far outweighed, IMO, by the very appealing fact that each time you remove hairs with the root intact, they grow back thinner and weaker.

In some cases, when a hair is taken out by the root, the papilla is killed. The papilla is the life-giving area at the very base of the follicle. If it's killed, a hair will never regrow from that follicle. Yay... victory!

Permanent Hair Removal or Reduction

This is a great choice for areas where you just cannot stand to have any hair whatsoever. It does not always work with one treatment and can be very costly to have professionally done, which I'd recommend.

Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal that can be accurately called "permanent." Lasers are considered ineffective as a permanent solution.

Lasers do temporarily remove hair and some who have undergone laser treatments have been very satisfied with the results. Read more about each method in the articles below.
