Natural Sweeteners

Three Sugar Alternatives

Natural sweeteners are gaining popularity because they are non-sucrose, low calorie, low glycemic, vegan and usually organic.

These friendly alternatives can be used to replace traditional, high calorie sweeteners such as sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, etc.

Agave (uh-gah-vay)

Named the #1 substitute for sugar by Dr. Mehmet Oz on Oprah. Agave is the nectar of the Agave Cactus species (one of which is used in making Tequila). The juice is extracted from the core of a living cactus plant. The nectar is processed at very low temperatures which results in a vitamin, enzyme and mineral rich sweetener.

This natural sweetener has a very low glycemic index (25-46), which makes it acceptable for those afflicted with diabetes and hyperglycemia. It's also usually organic and kosher (check individual labels).

Although this natural sweetener is touted as "low calorie" it actually has the exact same 60 calories per tbsp. as honey. However, Agave nectar is about 1.5x sweeter than traditional sweeteners, so take that into account when using it. Measure around 25% less Agave syrup than you'd ordinarily use of sugar, honey, etc.

To add to its list of benefits, Agave is also a natural moisturizing agent when used in baking breads, cakes, etc.

Steevia

The jury is still out on this one. The FDA has not approved Steevia for use as a sweetener, but does allow sale of it as a food additive. It has been widely used in Japan for decades, making up 40% of their sweetener market.

Steevia is available in both powder and liquid forms.

Apparently, Coco Cola and Pepsi have both invested in Steevia. So we could be seeing some changes to the classic, sugar-laden colas.

Yacon Syrup

Yacon syrup is harvested from the Yacon root and has a molasses-like flavor. It is very low calorie (30 calories/tbsp.) and is high in potassium and antioxidants.

Yacon is a raw, organic, kosher food that is glucose-free and its unique properties make it beneficial for the body in a number of ways.
