Physical Activity Levels

There are three different levels of physical activity. Strive to include all three levels in your daily routine.

LIGHT
moving your body continuously, but not strenuously...

  • walking around the grocery store or mall
MID-RANGE
slightly strenuous, but not enough to raise your heart rate much...
  • riding a bike
  • walking a dog
  • swimming
  • yoga
  • gardening
  • house cleaning
  • climbing stairs
VIGOROUS
cardiovascular exercises which raise your heart rate into the fat burning target zone...
  • running/jogging
  • hockey
  • soccer
  • tae bo
  • aerobics
  • high intensity intervals

For optimum health benefits, combine all three types for 60 minutes of activity per day.

Benefits Of Physical Activity

P.I.E.S.

Prevent diseases (cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, certain cancers, diabetes, obesity)
Increase self-esteem
Encourage an active family lifestyle

I use the acronym P.I.E.S. because if you incorporate regular physical activity into your life, you can eat pies on occasion without guilt. :-) It seemed fitting.

Physical fitness doesn't mean shelling out big bucks for a gym membership you may never use. You can get adequate exercise from a home workout like tae bo, or another workout video. Home gyms and fitness equipment are more effective and less expensive than in the past.
