Rowing Machines
A "Stroke" of Genius!
Rowing machines provide both aerobic exercise and strength building simultaneously. The workout activates every large muscle group in your body, making it an effective aerobic exercise.
AND, because a lot of the resistance is focused on your upper body, you will also strengthen your shoulders, arms, back, and even your stomach muscles at the same time.
The Benefits
As for all aerobic exercise, you'll benefit by burning fat and building your endurance. It will help to strengthen your heart and your upper body. Because the motion involved is gentle and consistent, it's very low impact.
Other benefits include:
- Low impact
- Full body workout
- You control intensity
- Stronger core muscles
- Improved cardiovascular fitness
- Increased flexibility, particularly in your back
- Good cross training machine to complement other sports
- Rhythmic nature of the movement may help to alleviate stress and clear your mind
Specific Exercises
There isn't a lot of variety involved, although you can adjust your position to alter the muscle groups being activated.
However, this also means that you're never going to be confused about what exercise to do next! Plus, there's less likelihood of you injuring yourself through improper technique.
Brands & Pricing
We snooped around a little and found some interesting offerings online...
Concept2 Rowing has two models for sale from around $2000. They have many dealers worldwide.
WaterRower's version emulates a true to life rowing experience, from around $1100.
Bodycraft retail their VR100 Rower for $700 which includes a one year warranty.
FluidRower offers a variable resistance model that automatically adapts to the intensity of your workout. Components have a one year warranty, and the frame has a five year warranty. It retails for approximately $1799.
The Warnings
If you have a troubled back, a bad knee, or any pre-existing injuries, the rowing machine is not for you. It will likely aggravate any weaknesses in those areas rather than strengthen them. A good range of motion throughout your body is a must in getting the most from this piece of equipment.
Due to the lack of variety, rowing machines are probably best suited as a complement to your current exercise or sporting routine. They offer a fantastic and efficient way to get an all over body workout, combining cardio with upper body strengthening.
