what would happen if one used brown sugar or icing sugar instead of the white sugar called for in the recipe? would the hair removal still work, does it even matter which type of sugar is used?

just curious

Brown Sugar = Yes, Icing Sugar = No
by: Katie

Yes, you can use brown sugar, you won't be able to use the light amber colour as an indication of doneness obviously, as brown sugar is darker. You'll have to test it by doing a firm ball test, like in candy making where you drop it in water etc.

Here's a video of someone making a similar paste to this recipe with brown sugar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuqzMIu5uoQ She really knows her stuff. It shows her using a candy thermometer to test the recipe. In the comments for that video she also mentions that the brown sugar mix was a little crumbly the next day. (compared to the white sugar mix)

I wouldn't recommend using icing sugar as often times it contains cornstarch and other funky ingredients. It also wont measure out the same as regular sugar because the particles are so much finer.

Hope this helps! Cheers!
